The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”, it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom.
This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their wedding day. It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our number one seller today.
The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George Washington”.

My boyfriend and I stayed at a wonderful Airbnb in Lake George for our first Valentine’s Day together (shoutout to North River Hobby Farm’s Camp Bossie) and the bed in the cabin had a vintage Martha Washingtons choice bedspread on it. We were so in love with it that we simply had to have one of our own so I purchased one for my boyfriend as a birthday gift to remember our first Valentine’s Day together. We sleep with it every night and it’s so comfortable year round. We love it!
