Description

The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”, it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom. 

This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their wedding day.  It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our number one seller today.

The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George Washington”.

Martha Washington Bedspread

I love the Martha Washington Bedspread. My parents had the bedspread years ago on their bed. I also have owned several, too, but this is the first time that I have purchased it directly from Bates. This is my second one that I have purchased from Bates, the first one was the Cape Cod bedspread.

Bringing back childhood memories

I fondly remember how I loved my two Aunts Bates bedspreads and wished I could someday own one like it! It just took me to reach 77 years old to finally buy one for myself. It’s so beautiful!! Everyone loves it!

Just bought my latest Bates Martha Washington spread and it is beautiful, like all the others I have owned. My mother was a customer in the 1950's and my daughter is also following our tradition. Keep up the good work.
