The Abigail Adams Bedspread was originally introduced by Bates in 1976 during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. This old-fashioned bedspread design was inspired by the handwoven cotton quilts that President John Adams used while serving abroad as a diplomat in France.
Many consider the Abigail Adams to be our most beautiful matelasse bedspread, and if nothing else, it is certainly the most ornate. This cotton bedspread features a central floral bust framed by French scrollwork that is further elevated by finely detailed accents throughout.
The Abigail Adams Bedspread has also been known in the past as "First Lady's Choice" or simply "Abigail."

I inherited my parents Abigail Adams bedspread about 15 years ago and love it! I don’t know exactly how long they had it before I received it but guessing they had it for at least 15 years. So after 30 or so years of daily use it started to show a little wear on the underside where your hands pull the covers up. So Happy to be able to have a new version of a Beautiful Bedspread and still have a sentimental attachment to keeping the same pattern and color. The Abigail Adams in linen goes well with any room color ❤️. I also have to say my communications with Katie at Bates was over the top helpful! She went the extra mile to help me determine the age of my parents bedspread. Many Thanks!

This is my second Abilgail. I like Linen best, for better view of motif. Antique is lighter brighter but design less prominent. The design lines line up with the edge of the bed nicely. I added a paisley comforter rolled at the bottom of the bed, in antique and gray, with matching pillows at top and it looks plush
Abigail Adams is a Beauty! More lovely that I could’ve imagined- the Wedgewood blue is truly the perfect celestial shade of blue. The crochet and fringe is the perfect addition to the gorgeous hand woven line of spreads, shams, etc. Highest Recommendation possible for Bates- Patience is required on shipping, but you will be thrilled beyond, when received!!
